Step 1: Using the Tools menu in Outlook Express , select the Accounts... option. |

This will open the Internet Accounts window where the mail accounts are listed.
| Step 2: Select the Mail tab in the Internet Accounts window. The mail accounts are listed in the corresponding pane. | |
| Step 3: After selecting the mail account to change, click the Properties button on the right side of the Internet Accounts window. This action will open the Properties window. | |
| Step 4: Select the Servers tab in the Properties window. This tab contains the settings required to be changed for the SMTP authentication. In the bottom section of the window (Outgoing Mail Server), check the box next to "My server requires authentication" and click the "Settings..." button. | |
This will open the Outgoing Mail Server window which is used to adjust the settings for the SMTP authentication process.
| Step 5: When the Outgoing Mail Server window opens, you can use the same username and password as those of the POP server or you can use a different SMTP server username and password combination if you have another account. | |
| Step 6: However, if the SMTP server is not the same server as the POP server, you can use SMTP authentication by checking the button next to "Log on using" and filling out Account name with your name and password. After these settings have been changed, click the "OK" button to close this window. | |
After all of the windows in the above steps are closed, this e-mail account will be configured to use SMTP authentication.
