Mail accounts in Eudora are based on entities called Personalities. Each personality contains an Incoming Mail (POP) server, an Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server, and one username/password combination to be used on both accounts. For situations in which the username/password combination are the same for Incoming Mail (POP) and Outgoing Mail (SMTP), a single Personality will suffice.
However, for situations in which the Incoming Mail (POP) and Outgoing Mail (SMTP) servers do NOT share the same username/password combination, a single Personality will not work. Two Personalities are required to work with cases in which the Incoming Mail (POP) and Outgoing Mail (SMTP) servers do NOT share the same username/password combination. These steps are outlined below:
| Step 1. Using the Eudora Window menu, select Personalities. | ![]() |
This will open the Personalities window. The Personality named <<Dominant>> should already exist. These instructions will be using the <<Dominant>> Personality and another Personality to be created later.
| Step 2. If the <<Dominant>> personality is not chosen, select it from the list of personalities. | ![]() |
When <<Dominant>> is chosen, the buttons at the bottom left corner are enabled and the personality can be edited.
| Step 3. Click the right-most small button at the bottom of the Personalities window to edit the <<Dominant>> personality. | ![]() |
This will open a Settings window, where Personalities can be created and edited. First, the <<Dominant>> personality will be edited. Then a new personality will be created.
| Step 4. Select the Personalities category on the left pane of the Settings window. Note that the Personality listed in the drop-down list is <<Dominant>>. This means that all information entered in Personalities and Personality Extras pane will apply to the <<Dominant>> Personality. | ![]() |
Step 5. Enter the following information into the Personalities entries:
| Field | Value |
| Real name: | enter your real name |
| Username: | enter your Outgoing (SMTP) username |
| Mail Host: | enter the name of your Outgoing (SMTP) mail server |

| Send mail whenever sends are done | check |
The next settings to change are on the Personality Extras category
| Step 6. For the <<Dominant>> personality, make no changes in the Personality Extras category. | ![]() |
The <<Dominant>> personality has been edited. Now a second personality will be created and its function is to retrieve email.
| Step 7. Click the "New" button to create a new Personality and give it the name of "Retrieving". | ![]() |
Step 8. Enter the following information into the Personalities entries:
| Field | Value |
| Real name: | enter your real name |
| Username: | enter your Incoming (POP) username |
| Mail Host: | enter the name of your Incoming (POP) mail server |

Once these settings are made, the Personality Extras category will be selected.
| Step 9. Click the Personality Extras category and select the type of server used to retrieve mail. For most, a POP server will be used. | ![]() |
After clicking the "OK" button, the personalities will be saved. The next step is to create the filter which enable use of both personalities to send and receive email.
| Step 10. Using the Window menu, select Filters to open the Filters window. | ![]() |
When the Filters window is opened, it may be disabled.
| Step 11. To enable the Filters window, click the "New" button. | ![]() |
The Filters window is now enabled and the proper settings for the filter can be applied.
| Step 12. In the Filters window, on the Filters tab, make the changes as illustrated. | ![]() |
The settings to be made to the Match section of the Filters window are as follows:
